Photo Gallery of Westminster artists
1. Pianists
5Paul Badura-Skoda ;
Born in Vienna.
Not also excellent player but excellent
musicologist. Eminent in solo works,
and more in chamber music. |
|
3Jörg Demus ; Also
born in Vienna. Called 'Viennese troika' with
Badura-Skoda and Friedrich
Gulda.
Like Badura-Skoda, he is ambidextrous in solo,
chamber musics, and accompaniment of lieds. |
2. Other
solists
5Walter Barylli ;
Studied at Munich. Entered the Philharmonic only
at 17, and became concertmaster the next year.
His music-making style was tender. His untimely
resign due to illness is bad news to the fans of
the Viennese chamber music. |
5Hans Kamesch ;
oboist. |
|
3Leopold Wlach ; His
name is the beginning of famous clarinetist of
Viennese school - Alfred Boskovsky, Alfred Prinz,
Schmidl, etc.
His tone-color is somewhat
sombre-dark, but music well self-controlled and
sophisticated. His famous recordings are by all
Westminster label except for Mozart's concerto
with Karajan(EMI, 1949). Mozart's quintet and
concerto, and Brahms' sonata, trio, and quintet
are monaural, but almost legendary. |

Ensembles
|
3Barylli Quartet ;
Members were all the leaders of the string part
of Vienna Philharmonic. Originally leaded by
Wolfgang Schneiderhann, but young concertmaster
Walter Barylli took the position in 1951 after
Schneiderhann turned to solist. Members were
Barylli, Otto Strasser(2nd vn.), Rudolf
Streng(va.), and Richard Krotschak(vc.).
Krotschak was replaced by Emanuel Brabec in 1955.
Unfortunately, Barylli had
himself have a trouble at right arm to resign all
the stage playing in 1959. From then on, Willi
Boskovsky took the position and the name was
changed to Vienna Philharmonic Quartet.[ First row ] from left,

3Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet ;
Founded in 1934, by the members of the Vienna
Symphony. But till 1938, all the members moved to
the Philharmonic. Members from beginning to 1958
were Anton Kamper(1st vn), Karl Maria Titze(2nd
vn.), Erich Weis(va.), and Franz Kwarda(vc.). By
these members, all of the Westminster recordings
were made.
After 1958, other members
except Kamper were changed and recordings became
rarer(Schubert SQ is another name of this group).
Disbanded in 1967, because Kamper resigned from
playing. [ From
